On September 3, 2006, while serving with 7 Platoon Charles Company of the Royal Canadian Regiment during what would become Canada’s largest military operation in Afghanistan, Operation Medusa, Corporal Sean Teal was assigned to a light utility vehicle.
During combat operations, Corporal Teal’s vehicle was hit and destroyed by an enemy rocket-propelled grenade. Wounded in the attack, Corporal Teal assessed the situation and under continuous heavy enemy fire made a report to bring assistance.
Corporal Teal returned twice to the destroyed vehicle to provide treatment to his severely wounded comrades, including the platoon medic. He assisted with the evacuation of all his wounded and killed comrades.
Corporal Teal’s bravery under enemy fire saved the lives of his comrades who were exposed and vulnerable to intense enemy fire. Regrettably, during this engagement, Warrant Officer Rick Nolan was killed in the vehicle that Corporal Teal was in, and on that fateful day, Sergeant Shane Stachnik was killed in another vehicle. Twelve members of the Canadian Armed Forces would be killed during Operation Medusa.
For an in-depth account of Corporal Teal’s service on that day, Legion Magazine provides a detailed account in its magazine. https://legionmagazine.com/afghanistan-veteran-recounts-brutal-battle/
Corporal Teal’s actions under heavy enemy fire would be recognized with the Star of Military Valour.
